Redevelopment of "Le Casermette" district
The intervention area is a disused military zone known as "Le Casermette", located at the entrance of the city of Iglesias.
Within the area, alongside a spontaneous tendency, it has developed one of the best interventions of "INA casa"(1942-52) designed by Ettore Sottsass Sr. and Jr. and realized only partially. The self-modifying process of the space didn't stop and took place in total absence of a project, both social and architectural nature, without any kind of action aimed at requalification to make the district functional to new role that was beginning to acquire; in this way it has grown up a situation of profound degradation due both to poor housing conditions and the lack of adequate public spaces. Now the buildings that were part of the military district are in a state of profound degradation.
The aim of the program is the construction of a new quality of this part of the city subtracting to the marginal and random feature which did not allow to the public areas to become 'place', by inserting it into an integrated program of residence, services leisure, social customs and recreating the system of paths, trying to re-establish the poor use of the space contained between the consolidated city and the strong limit represented by the near cemetery.
The project actions are scheduled according to different timing and provide essentially to work on the quality of the program (functions, relationships with the parts and with the surrounding texture, etc.), on the morphological quality of the sites (redevelopment of the existing, insertion of new high architectural quality buildings harmonized with the existing, etc.) and high environmental sustainability of interventions (innovative technological solutions, choice of materials, etc.).
