Environmental enhancement of the Poetto beach
The TU.VA.RI.AM. POETTO 1 project, carried out under the ReactEU PON Metropolitan Cities 2014–2020 program, aims to protect and enhance the dune system and coastal area of the Poetto beach in Cagliari. The interventions include the protection of the dunes through low-impact fencing and bilingual informational signage equipped with QR codes, the maintenance of existing natural engineering works, and the redesign of beach access points to prevent sand dispersion. The project also involves dune restoration through micro sand movements and the planting of native species, with a strong focus on preserving vegetation and maintaining the freshwater aquifer.
The project integrates environmental sustainability with accessibility and public space usability by introducing removable wooden walkways to provide sea access for people with motor disabilities. These lightweight, easy-to-move structures will be installed at five strategic points along the coastline. In parallel, shaded smoking areas have been designed, enclosed by wooden posts and equipped with QR code signage providing access to usage regulations, supporting the enforcement of the beach smoking ban.
Special attention has been given to the design of beach access points, with the addition of transverse walkways that prevent sand from drifting onto adjacent roads and help distribute beachgoers more evenly. All structures and materials have been carefully selected to ensure minimal landscape impact and full respect for the coastal ecosystem, avoiding any alteration to the natural beach profile.
