Redevelopment of piazza San Pio X
The intervention on the square of St. Pio X is part of a wider plan for redevelopment that will affect the entire Serra Perdosa district in which it is placed. The overall redevelopment plan concerns the new parking areas, redevelopment of public spaces, as well as urgent measures for restoration of the church. The intervention on the square aims to redevelop this area by putting it in direct relation with the city, making it fully usable for both neighborhood activities and church activities.
The project aims to transform the public space through the careful use of few elements: the materials and the laying of pavements, green elements, urban furniture.
The project is developed along the line that runs parallel to the road, where in place of the existing wall is a basalt line, thus defining the division of the square from the actual sidewalk. Along this strip, the furniture, lighting fixtures, the flower beds, are arranged according to the logic of "functional blocks" that will attract and accommodate users. In this way, the perception is that of a unitary space in which the passage area is well distinguishable from that of the square.
The furnishings are custom designed based on a modular philosophy and are made from prefabricated concrete bench with inert basalt exposed, the waste basket in steel mounted on concrete with aggregates of basalt exposed, the metal carrier modules, from flower beds bounded by sheet-metal elements. The lighting system of the entire square has been redesigned in order to maintain the highest level of comfort and safety in compliance with the rules relating to light pollution.
Wherever possible we have chosen to keep all the existent trees, believing the area as an important green area for the neighborhood, providing more space for the trees through an enlargement of the flower beds.
