Redevelopment of piazza Municipio
The intervention promoted by the Municipal Administration of Iglesias involved the redevelopment of Piazza Municipio, one of the most significant public spaces in the historic center, with the aim of restoring its urban dignity and functionality, while reconnecting it with the surrounding architectural and landscape context.
The project included the removal of the existing porphyry paving, which had deteriorated, and its replacement with new granite slabs, a material closely tied to the local building tradition and already used in the streets of the historic center. The design of the new paving was defined based on a thorough historical, photographic, and cartographic study of the square to restore visual and functional coherence with the existing urban context.
The intervention also extended to the adjacent streets (via Mazzini and via Satta), with pavings designed to ensure formal and material continuity with the existing portions. It also integrated new urban furniture elements and provisions for a future lighting system. Granite seating and bollards were placed based on historical documentation, contributing to the perimeter definition of the public space.
Particular attention was given to addressing the stormwater drainage issues, especially in front of the cathedral's facade, where the point drainage systems were replaced with a linear system integrated into the design of the new paving. A similar intervention was also carried out on via Rolfi.
The project also included the installation of a new conduit for the lighting system, replacing the inadequate existing one, and the laying of fiber optic cables, ensuring the technological update of the square's infrastructure system.
The entire redevelopment was carried out in compliance with the Superintendent's guidelines, with design solutions focused on simplicity and linearity, aimed at enhancing a central public space in the urban system and in the collective memory of the city.
