Renovation of a traditional building
The intervention, starting from the typological characteristics of the typical southern Sardinia courtyard house, seeks to enhance its potential with a contemporary view.
The project carries out a reconstruction of the building, eliminating the additions and mending the fragmentations that have sprung up over the time.
On the ground floor the volumes that constitute the living and those hosting the service areas are arranged around the courtyard making it again recognizable. The raised volumes are all located on the north side (the bedroom) and the one immediately opposite and overlooking the access road (the study area). The sleeping area is served by one large terrace that looks directly into the court.
As opposed to the purely introverted character of the traditional courtyard house, with few openings to the street, the volumes placed on the court are opened in such a way as to give the maximum permeability to the eye through the volumes. The large glass doors are aligned so as to space with the eye: inside the house, through the court, into the room directly opposite; from the main courtyard, through the house, to the small back court; from the back court, again through the volume of the living area, up to the front door and to the street. The same openings give rise to special effects at night, when every punch, through the interior lighting, looks like a painting whose subject is the domestic life of the inhabitants of the house.
Even from the materials' choice point of view , even in a profoundly contemporary approach, the choice fell on traditional skills and materials in compliance with the characteristics of the context where the building is located.
